First Draft: EAST BROTHERS LIGHTHOUSE STATION AND INN lyrics, will hopefully be put to Song by Bill Taylor and Den McCue, who know a good song when they write one, and a 'bad' song when they hear one! At Tom Butt's request: one of the Fine Founders of this wonderful Island in the San Francisco East Bay....

EAST BROTHERS LIGHTHOUSE STATION AND INN

Takin' the old whale boat out from San Pedro
The Harbor is dark with the mud of low tide...
Just everyone's faces are lined with new smiles
For this trip to this Island's a really fun ride!
______________

CHORUS

East Brother - West Brother - shine in the sunshine
And both go to silver under Bay moonlight...
East Brother is magic with Light from the Lighthouse -
It spins it's good web of hope into the night....
______________

The house is so Gingerbread-Victorian - and
The barks of the seals - the seagull's harsh calls:
Are the Music around her awash in the currents -
Dark cormorants dive near the Island's rock walls...

Her Diaphone Foghorn shakes all in its hearing -
Gives grand reassurance: All Is As Should Be...
White picket fences guard - the grounds are for walkin' -
Her Innkeepers smiles are so welcome and free...

CHORUS

Staying at night, ten asleep on the Island:
Enjoying fine meals and good company -
'Real World' far away - Richmond Bridge lights all blinkin' -
Only the Lighthouse Beam shines on the Bay...

For decades this Lighthouse has harbored its Keepers -
Kept the way open from Delta to Bay...
It's days knew the likes of hard-Workers who keep her still
Open for all to enjoy yet, today!

From Walter "Pops" Fanning, Tom Butts, and the Others
Who gave years and years to keep her future bright:
Many Thanks to her Keepers and Friends of this Lighthouse
That brightens both Hearts and the Bay with her Light....

CHORUS

  1. This may or may not work. I'm still struggling with meter. I'm out-of-it when it comes to placing lyrics with song. When Bernstein wrote Candide, the lyrics followed the music, not vice-versa, which is the way Gilbert & Sullivan worked. I'm probably too engrossed in Schubert and Mendelssohn lieder right now to even "hear" what's great about great lyrics. I've had a horrible time even "absorbing" a new "Our Father" hymn in our Methodist church. We've been doing it every Sunday for two months, but, darn it, nobody is catching on to the rhythm, least of all me. The composer was at our annual conference in Salem, OR, and he was great, but, somehow, this simple tune is getting away from me. So don't rely on me for insight into new music. I'm hopeless.
