MEMORIAL DAY AND THE SQUALL was written and sent to friends last year...here it is again...not One Thing has changed....

MEMORIAL DAY AND THE SQUALL

It is squalling
The skies are weeping the
heaviest tears

The people weeping
stone serious
next to the sad flags
dripping all that
sorrow
back into the earth

We are not a war people
tho we say we are

Knowing only Peace
at home
we don't know what to
think, to feel

Until this squall
came out of the very
heavens, drenched with
meaning

Now we chant in our
inner hearts
the names of those who
served
who
died

We do remember all their
names
now
and where they were

World War Two
Korea
Viet Nam
Cambodia
Laos
Afganistan
Iran
Persian Gulf
Kuwait
Iraq
Afganistan - again

and all the Small Places
that never even hit
the evening news

He was deployed
how many times?
She was deployed
how many times?

The Vets in their
electric wheel chairs
wait under the awning

Winter Soldiers
grim with what they do

A dad in uniform
lifts up his child
with his little flag
waving

For Grandpa
For Uncle Joe
For Aunt Sue
For Father Bill
For his brother
Who never came back

to stand in this rain.
to stand in this rain.
